Product details

Elise Scherer-Leu managed her family's farm in Meggen, Lucerne, during World War II while her husband was in service: "We had no fear of the war; we simply didn't have time for such thoughts. We didn't know where to put all the work." Kurt Bigler was the only member of his family to survive the deportation from Germany. In 1942, the then 17-year-old fled to Switzerland: "How did I get across the border? There was a hole in the barbed wire, and I slipped through." Kurt Bigler and Elise Scherer-Leu are two of over 500 witnesses of World War II who have been interviewed and filmed as part of the oral history project "Archimob." About 80 of them share their stories in this book. Their memories provide an authentic glimpse into life at that time and showcase a generation that critically and thoughtfully engages with its own past.
