Gem hunters, shepherds and farmers, maids, millers, and herdsmen are the main characters of these Romansh legends from the upper Vorderrheintal and the Val Lumnezia. They were first published by the three local collectors Caspar Decurtins, Anton Derungs, and Guglielm Gadola. The selection demonstrates that the so-called popular sayings have been interpreted and recorded quite differently depending on the publisher and the time. The texts are presented here in their original form and in German translation: enigmatic images from an archaic and rugged mountain world that had not yet been fully discovered, explained, explored, and managed. A world where not everything was possible, where ruthless desire was sometimes harshly punished, and shy restraint was richly rewarded.
