Theo Frey (1908-1997) is often mentioned in the same breath as the classics of Swiss reportage photography - Hans Staub, Gotthard Schuh, Paul Senn. However, his overall work is less known than that of this first, slightly older generation of photojournalists. This is partly because it has remained insufficiently explored and accessible to this day. On the other hand, it likely also relates to Frey's unpretentious style: his carefully constructed, factual reports thrive less on fleeting and dramatic snapshots and more on a sharp eye for the inconspicuous - for the everyday life that shapes people. In his photographs, Theo Frey expresses social commitment and a deep sympathy for the life worlds of ordinary people. With his strictly documentary approach, he consistently captures memorable images throughout his career.
