Product details

Paul Joos accompanied nearly 300 residents of Valendas GR with his camera. The impressive black-and-white photographs depict how life, work, and celebrations unfold in the village. Christoph Schwyzer gives voice to the people, who share their hopes and wishes, reminisce about old Valendas, and contemplate the future. In literary sketches, both the village and the landscape are given a voice. A quarter of the Swiss population lives in mountainous areas, which account for about two-thirds of the country's surface area. Many mountain regions struggle with emigration, leading to the closure of post offices and schools—leaving behind older individuals and memories of better times. The mountain village of Valendas, situated above the Rhine Gorge, demonstrates that this need not be the case. The residents saved the village shop and the only inn from decline, and they are committed to the renovation of historic houses.
