The book "They Drive You into the Desert" by Dora Sakayan tells the moving story of civil engineer Fritz Sigrist and nurse Clara Hilty, who travel to southeastern Turkey in April 1915, shortly after their wedding. There, they witness the Armenian deportations unfolding before their eyes. While living in their remote cottage, they become aware that these are targeted death marches. Despite their efforts to help the Armenian workers on the Baghdad railway, many of them must follow these cruel marches. Clara documents the atrocities in her diary entries, while Fritz also writes accounts. Sakayan has carefully transcribed the cursive documents and placed them in historical context. Additionally, the story of Haig Aramian, an Armenian warehouseman whom the couple helps to escape, is told. This book not only provides insight into personal fates but also into the dark history of this time.
