Count Otto von Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of Lauenburg (1815-1898), is the most significant German statesman and politician of the 19th century. His actions shaped German and European history long beyond his lifetime. Due to his background, his life was characterized by a deep connection to the ruling house and the Prussian state. Bismarck studied law in Göttingen and Berlin. From 1851 to 1859, he served as Prussia's representative at the Federal Diet in Frankfurt. This was followed by years as a diplomat at the Russian court and, starting in 1862, in France. The victory over France in 1870/71 ultimately led to the founding of the German Empire. During his time as Chancellor of the Empire and simultaneously as Prime Minister, significant reforms were implemented: the administration of justice was standardized, the Foreign Office, as well as the Imperial Bank and the Imperial currency, were established.
