Karl Ernst von Baer (1792 - 1876), a German-Baltic naturalist, embryologist, zoologist, and geographer, is regarded as the discoverer of the human egg and was one of the most significant natural scientists of the 19th century. The present two-volume work "On the Developmental History of Animals" is a milestone in the literature on comparative embryology. It is a reprint of the original edition from 1828.
