Product details

How close is the chicken to humans? Could it be that chickens possess much more human-like traits than we previously thought? Or is it the other way around: do we resemble chickens more than we ever suspected? Beth Moon has photographed over 50 chickens and juxtaposed these portraits with texts from world literature. The result is astonishing, as we suddenly see in the rooster, who self-importantly throws back his head to make his feathered crown more visible, a dandy reminiscent of Oscar Wilde, or in the well-behaved, somewhat shy-looking hen a character from a Jane Austen novel. Graceful, delicate, and at times quirky and daring, various characters seem to emerge through Beth Moon's photographs: whether it’s Machiavelli's Prince, the Count of Monte Cristo, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and many more. Beth Moon has also had the opportunity to photograph some of Isabella Rossellini's chickens.
