The volume consists of twelve lectures given by members of the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Mainz, as well as guest speakers as part of the Forum for Literary Translation in Germersheim. The articles cover areas such as translation theory, reception history, and translation criticism, as well as workshop reports. The theory-oriented contributions address aspects such as the translator's empathy, translating from minority languages, feminist translation, or subtitling and synchronization. The second group includes essays on the translation of Thomas Mann in the USA, Astrid Lindgren in France, Chinese literature, and French chansons in German translation. Practical translation experiences are demonstrated through works by Plautus, Montaigne, Camões, and a Hungarian bestseller.
