A culture research that claims to be enlightening and/or interventionist cannot overlook Gramsci's thoughts on culture. The term "culture," along with "hegemony" and "intellectuals," is among the most central concepts in his work and permeates all areas of his creation. The reformulation of the concept of culture, a central axis of his work, makes him an indispensable theorist for Cultural Studies to this day. Gramsci's engagements with popular literature, newspapers, serialized novels, and folk, crime, and adventure literature are rich in interdisciplinary context and are enlightening, indeed essential for a political study of literature. His discussions on Benedetto Croce and contemporary literary criticism, as well as on Tolstoy, Manzoni, and Pirandello's theater, along with his reflections on intellectuals and their history, are timelessly valuable.
