Domesticity, home, living - these terms articulate the so-called "private," its privileged space, its atmospheres, and its states of being. The domestic is also referred to as the sphere of the supposedly apolitical, personal, and individual. However, it has always been a territory of regulatory techniques, educational strategies, emotional bonds, and work relationships. The contributions in this volume dedicated to Irene Nierhaus relate to a conception of living space as a complex and flexible structure in which subjectivity, gender, nation, and community are constituted.
