The art world has declared a documentary turn. Together with the trend of art's repoliticization, it forms a focal point of contemporary exhibitions. And although the documentary aspect involves a wide range of methods, photography and film remain the essential media of this turn. The book uses this starting point to inquire into the historical conditions of documentary artistic practice, the specific conditions and challenges of exhibiting films, and documentary methods such as reenactment and the use of found footage, which are valued in art but are not exclusively confined to it. Finally, the volume focuses on specific films that make the boundaries between art and cinema, and between the world of film and that of art, seem obsolete, as they can be shown, viewed, and commented on in both contexts.
