The Wumpuck sits lonely and far from his home on a tree and cannot help himself: "My legs won't carry me." For the animals of the forest, he is a stranger and is initially rejected by them. But the nimble Kunterbunts come and help without any conditions. They join forces to build him a "flying vehicle" with which he can "fly back to Wumpuckland along the cloud band," but "where that is remains unknown." The loss of home can only be compensated by solidarity. At its core, the story addresses the human primal experience of losing unconditional security and the enduring longing for a world without exclusion. This is conveyed through striking images and clear, memorable verses. Children understand much about human dependence and vulnerability and learn here that through empathy, they can make a difference.
