This is not a conventional logical treatise; yet this study aims at nothing less than a theory of meaning. This theory is unfolded through a series of paradoxes, for meaning itself does not exist; meaning necessarily requires a reference to non-meaning and nonsense. This specific theory of meaning has its thinkers and predecessors. Among them, Lewis Carroll and the Stoics hold a privileged position: Carroll, because he was the first to take stock of the paradoxes of meaning and to stage them; the Stoics, because they inaugurated a new image of the philosopher in breaking with the pre-Socratics, Socratic thought, and Platonism, which is closely linked to the paradoxical formation of the theory of meaning.
