In a world of the internet and smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and others with their constant and dense communication offerings, engaging with the topic of loneliness seems almost outdated. However, our experiences with patients show a different picture: many people are lonely, feel lonely, and suffer from their loneliness. The painful experience of loneliness and isolation is a widespread phenomenon in postmodern capitalist societies in the 21st century.
