This foundational study aimed to investigate the dependence of the longitudinal contraction of arterial segments from the carotid artery of pigs on triggering and inhibiting stimuli. For this purpose, after two preliminary experiments on a vein and an artery, 16 arterial samples from slaughtered pigs, each with a length of 30 mm, were mounted in an organ bath after being pre-stretched to 150% of their free resting length between the fixation points. Following the establishment of a baseline, the samples were stimulated using catecholamines, caffeine, electrical current, and temperature differences. After reaching a new baseline, each sample was subjected to an additional stimulus until no further reaction was observed, with a maximum of five stimuli allowed. The tensions recorded ranged from a minimum of 2.3 mN to a maximum of 80.6 mN, and were digitally recorded using a force transducer. The responses of the samples to the applied stimuli varied significantly. Notably, the dilatory effects were greater than the constrictive effects in all samples, and the impact of catecholamines, as well as the effects of calcium channel blockers and competitive cholinergic receptor blockers, were less pronounced than expected.
