Product details

Fifty years ago, on August 20, 1965, the Auschwitz trial concluded at the District Court of Frankfurt am Main after 183 days of hearings, with the announcement and justification of the verdict. The trial is considered one of the milestones in German history: the still ongoing serious examination of the Nazi past as a "court day held over ourselves" (Fritz Bauer). Peter Jochen Winters (born 1934) attended the Auschwitz trial as an editor for the then-weekly newspaper "Christ und Welt" and wrote about it. The book contains his articles from that time, which are now considered eyewitness accounts due to the questions raised and thoughts expressed within them. They are supplemented by later articles by the author on Auschwitz from the FAZ. Additionally, the appendix of the book includes excerpts from the Frankfurt verdict, the testimony of SS judge Konrad Morgen at that time, and the ruling of the Supreme Court of the GDR in the case against Auschwitz doctor Dr. Horst Fischer.
