At some point, communication with a person suffering from Alzheimer's comes to an end. What kind of relationship is possible now beyond language, beyond understanding? We understand and are understood; this is part of the fundamental essence of being human. But what happens when we encounter a person who does not understand and whom we cannot understand because they have lost language? Schütze seeks an answer to this question in his encounters with his mother, who has Alzheimer's. A human existence cannot be fully grasped within the horizon of understanding, but we have no receptors for the unspeakable and unfathomable. Where communication ceases, our power ends. To avoid experiencing this lack as a defeat, we usually deny the autonomy of the other’s voiceless existence. However, if we seek to engage with them, we must question these habitual ways of thinking.
