The Type 76 and Type 84 Lotus Eclat, produced from 1974 to 1982, was a coupe with a front engine and rear-wheel drive. It was based on the Lotus Elite but featured a fastback body style that offered more practicality with storage space in the trunk. The Eclat Series 1 (1974-1980) used a 1973 cm³ 160 hp Lotus 907 Slant Four engine. Later models (1980-1982) used a larger 2174 cm³ Lotus 912 engine; however, due to changes to comply with emission regulations, it still produced only 160 hp. Both were versions of the Lotus 907 engine series, which was also used in naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions in the Lotus Esprit. The car cost $28,400 in 1979, which was nearly as much as a Mercedes-Benz 450 SL. The original unalloyed steel chassis built by Lotus provided support.
