Alma lives with her violent husband Romel in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, which has a population in the millions. Romel is a member of a local gang called "Los Rebeldes." He is jealous and violent, and he does not hesitate to beat Alma whenever she talks to other men. However, Alma is a strong woman who refuses to be intimidated. Through her relationship with the young tourist Jean, she suddenly sees the opportunity to start a new life. Ciudad Juárez is likely the most well-known Mexican city in the world. Since the outbreak of the drug war in 2007, this million-strong city on the Mexican-American border has held the top position in crime statistics, with approximately 7 people murdered there each day.
