Wittgenstein wrote throughout his life about music and musicians he admired or rejected. For him, music was not only the most beloved of all arts, which he discussed in detail with friends and relatives, but it also repeatedly became the subject of philosophical reflection. This book is dedicated to extracting the implicitly present philosophy of music in the works of Ludwig Wittgenstein. It gathers the numerous and widely scattered aphorisms on music and places them within Wittgenstein's lines of thought regarding language criticism, as well as his statements on aesthetics and logic. Time and again, an astonishing proximity to Arnold Schönberg's considerations emerges. Beginning with the role of music in the years of the Tractatus, this work critically addresses the questions of music as language in Wittgenstein's later philosophy.
