In everyday conversation, we likely encounter lies more often than we realize: whether it's a white lie because we don't feel like going to an appointment, or an altruistic lie to protect someone. Even polite speech could be considered a lie. Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote: "Lying is a language game that must be learned, like any other." Lies also appear in other contexts: in talk shows, lie detectors are used to expose adulterers, or false statements are judged in court. Therefore, it is not surprising that there are numerous studies on lying from various fields. However, these works from psychology, law, education, or philosophy always refer to language as the medium of the lie. In the field of (Germanic) linguistics, there is also significant exploration.
