The significance of this material was evident not only in engineering, which produced magnificent results in the grand train stations or the cast-iron roof structure of the nearly completed Cologne Cathedral, but also politically in Bismarck's blood-and-iron dictum as a prerequisite for the unification of the Empire. With the Iron Cross designed by Schinkel, the metal was stylized into a patriotic symbol. Meanwhile, it conquered all areas of people's lives in the form of various everyday objects - ranging from paperweights to patriotic plates and casts of ancient sculptures.
