Product details

The 19th century is often referred to as the century of iron. The significance of this material was evident not only in engineering, which produced magnificent results in the grand train stations or the cast-iron roof structure of the nearly completed Cologne Cathedral, but also politically in Bismarck's blood-and-iron dictum as a prerequisite for the unification of the Empire. With the Iron Cross designed by Schinkel, the metal was stylized into a patriotic symbol. Meanwhile, it conquered all areas of people's lives in the form of various everyday objects - ranging from paperweights to patriotic plates and casts of ancient sculptures. Until now, the focus has mostly been on Prussian art casting when it comes to the artistic processing of iron. This volume aims to highlight that at that time, the Harz was one of the most important.
