The Swiss painter Pierre Louis Bouvier, who is primarily known today for his miniatures, first published this volume in 1827, which remains significant for the study of painting techniques. The edition, which first appeared in German in 1828, was revised by Adolf Ehrhardt. The work contains extensive information on colors, oils, and painting mediums, particularly on the production of paints, the necessary preliminary studies and background knowledge, the techniques of different genres, as well as the tools and workshop equipment. Additionally, an appendix on the restoration, regeneration, and conservation of old paintings is included. It is illustrated with numerous images and features a comprehensive index.
