Being pregnant is complicated these days. This impression arises at least when one sees how many decisions a woman has to make during pregnancy: It's no longer just about the "with whom" and the "when," but also about the "how." When one delves deeper into the preventive care concept commonly practiced in Germany, it quickly becomes clear what role the concept of risk plays in medical care: There are currently 52 defined risk factors in the maternity record, and between 60 and 80 percent of all pregnant women are classified as high-risk pregnancies. Based on research findings regarding the background of the risk factor model, this book investigates through a qualitative study how women defined as high-risk pregnancies experience pregnancy and medical care. The results suggest a need to reconsider current practices.
