He anticipated much of what would later characterize the emancipation movement of homosexuals, earning him the title of "the first gay man in world history" (V. Sigusch). Hubert Kennedy has restored historical awareness with his biography of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, first published in German in 1990. This new edition is not only thoroughly revised but also takes into account numerous new insights and testimonies.
