Luigi Settembrini (1813-1876) is one of the heroes of the Italian Risorgimento. After many years in political imprisonment, he translated the extensive works of the late antique author Lucian (circa 120-180 AD). From his writing "Erotes" (Two Kinds of Love), he was inspired to create his own version: Two boys, Kallikles and Doros, grow up together, become young men, and explore the various forms of love on their journey through life. Although a double wedding concludes the story, "even in old age, they found themselves together in the same bed from time to time when the opportunity arose." Six decades after the author's death, the erotic tale was discovered by chance but was withheld from the public to protect Settembrini's reputation. Finally published in 1977, it has long since become a classic text of homoerotic literature in Italy.
