Ravens are often associated with misfortune, gallows, pitch-black days, stealing like crows, and negligent parenting in our culture. However, even the god Odin recognized their intelligence and had a raven perched on each shoulder, informing him of what was happening in the world. In our fairy tales, they sometimes appear as wise helpers to the hero. In other cultures, they have a consistently positive image. Among North American Indians, they are seen as symbols of creativity and divine power: they created the earth and filled it with people and animals, brought fire to humanity, and guard and protect their culture.
