Making Visible: Politics of Documentary Film, Vol. 20

"The film not only shows images, it also surrounds them with a world." According to Gilles Deleuze, the relationship between image and world is multifaceted. In accordance with this heterogeneity, the documentary forms of making visible can be interpreted. A core component of documentary aesthetics and documentary politics is to direct attention to where it was previously lacking. Against the backdrop of a visibility that is seemingly inextricably linked to mechanisms of power and claims of knowledge, the volume "Making Visible: Politics of Documentary Film" aims to raise and discuss fundamental questions. These pertain to media aspects such as image, voice, and language, as well as the epistemological issues related to fiction, the reference to reality, and the ever-unstable yet increasingly dynamic nature of these concepts.
