While the sculptures and drawings of the Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso are frequently showcased in extensive exhibitions, his photographic work has received decidedly too little attention so far. The sculptor had already begun to interpret his plastic works through the medium of photography as early as the mid-1880s. The spatial arrangement of the sculptures in the studio or within the photographic space, the use of painterly techniques, and often irregularly cropped image carriers enabled Rosso to create the disembodied, even dematerialized atmosphere he desired when viewing his works: "Rien n'est materiel dans l'espace.".
