Feminist economics provides a fundamental insight into feminist critiques of economic theories as well as the main approaches to feminist theory formation. It presents their emergence and core themes. The prevailing economic theory and policy, along with essential economic indicators and statistical measures, are presented as gender-neutral. However, behind these seemingly neutral numbers and concepts lie gender inequalities; structures of domination and exploitation are thus obscured. Feminist economics uncovers these blind spots, critiques both the prevailing mainstream and heterodox strands of economics, and develops counter-models. Its core themes include, among others, criticism of neoclassicism and the underlying concept of homo economicus, as well as the distribution of paid and unpaid labor.
