Product details

Erased Memory - Remembered Erasure. In early October 1941, a 20-member group of police officers from Vienna received orders to march to Stryj in Eastern Galicia (now in Ukraine) to maintain peace and order. They only began their retreat in the summer of 1944. They left behind a trail of blood, with approximately 30,000 murdered Jews, either sent by train to Belcez for gas execution or shot during so-called "resettlements." Using documents from the Vienna City and Regional Archives, testimonies from survivors, and additional literature on the subject, the author explores the following questions: What was life like for the Jewish community in Stryj during the interwar period? How did they manage to survive despite all the dangers? And how did the police group perceive their mission? What experiences of the war were particularly formative for them? From the results.
