On the dynamics of inpatient psychoanalytic treatment. This work by Wilhelm Burian, in collaboration with G. Thil-Eicher, D. Schmid, and U. Wirth, describes the tension between therapists and patients in psychoanalytically oriented treatment within the setting of a hospital and therapeutic community. A central theme is the incessant dynamics of transference and countertransference and how they influence the treatment. Particularly highlighted is the ongoing confrontation with destructive narcissism and the resistance to any change. The foundations of inpatient psychoanalytic treatment and specific questions are presented in an illustrative manner and illustrated with case examples.
