Product details

For the long 19th century, historians typically mark the beginning with the revolutions in North America and France around 1780 and conclude it with the First World War, including the attempt at a first global peace order around 1920. The limited opportunities in Western Europe led, in the first half of the 19th century, to an awareness of its overseas hinterlands in North America and the Caribbean, which were utilized for fuel, construction, and food supplies. Sugar and cotton formed the complementary foundations of an economy that supplied the consumer goods market of Western Europe with the help of slaves and contract workers. Alongside the increasing flow of goods, globally observable migrations were a particularly distinctive feature of the 19th century. With the rising numbers of migrating people, religions and revolutions also spread across the globe.
