Famous precursor to "1984" and "Brave New World." Prosperity and easy work for all, partnerships without conflict, and a culture from childhood on - this is what the best of all possible worlds should look like. Never before has the coexistence in a society been imagined so humanely as in "Utopia" ("No Place"), this first state novel of our time. The contrast in the 16th century, marked by social injustices, conflicts, and crime, could hardly be greater. Thomas More's depiction of a journey to a haven of pure harmony was not entirely serious against this backdrop. Rather, "Utopia" often tips into irony, making the novel an equally stimulating and likable read even today.
