Until that point, the representation of a naked woman as "Venus" or "Nymph" had always been tied to ancient mythology, with skin depicted as flawless and shadowless; now, people were upset about "dirty hands." Fellow artists like Courbet mocked the work, and everyone of note took a stance, mostly against it. However, Zola publicly supported the painter, being one of the few who recognized the potential of the painting.
