This is a contemporary collection that explores an emerging field of research in an interesting and original way. The chapters cover a variety of relevant topics for anyone interested in the study and history of manga, as well as the adaptation of manga into different media. With a focus on intercultural and transcultural issues, this collection presents a relatively cohesive picture, despite the varying complexity of the essays. The second half of the volume is particularly coherent: it offers analyses of the popular manga and anime Naruto. While most contributions provide at least some literary or media theoretical approaches that are suitable only for specialists, some of the essays are also accessible to non-specialists: these include the outstanding contribution by Frederik Schodt on North America and the discussion by Yamanaka Chie.
