"If I am not familiar to you: the fourth of the six unrecognized T.M. children," Monika Mann wrote to Martin Gregor-Dellin in 1972, and she had every reason not to assume her notoriety: literary critics and filmmakers overlooked her, or they relied on the judgment of Katia and Thomas Mann, who classified their daughter as inferior and peculiar. With her father's expatriation, Monika Mann lost her German citizenship in the autumn of 1936. After living in Sanary-sur-Mer, Florence, Vienna, Zurich, London, and New York, she finally spent over thirty years on Capri. There, she overcame her great trauma, the loss of her husband, who drowned before her eyes in 1940 while fleeing from Europe to Canada after a German submarine torpedoed their ship. For nearly forty years, she worked as a cultural journalist and published in German, English, and Italian.
