Size records for container ships are piling up, leading to massive infrastructure investments in port regions. However, there has yet to be a critical discussion about the future design of container shipping. The author explains the opportunities, risks, and requirements arising from the growth in the size of container ships. Innovative design possibilities for the areas of ship, port, and hinterland are a focal point. The methods presented are transferable to other maritime transport chains.
