Product details

Wooden sailing vessels have long defined commercial shipping in Northern Germany. Characteristic of these vessels was their robust construction, adapted to the specific demands of the region, but also their limited lifespan. They lasted one, at most two generations, after which the seams weakened and the wood rotted. Competitors utilized larger, more economical units, creating commercial pressure that had to be yielded to. As a result, entire types of vessels became extinct or were developed to the point of unrecognizability within a few decades. This also affected the wooden Ever of the Lower Elbe, which shaped the image of the ports until World War II. Today, 80 years later, documents from every era are all the more important. This reissued and still unmatched foundational work on the wooden Ever of the Lower Elbe was created in the 19th century.
