For centuries, women's lack of suitability for ruling was repeatedly affirmed. As a result, true reigning queens by their own right were rare. Guardian regencies represented the most significant avenue of power for them. A special role was played by the female governors of the Netherlands. The book presents 58 interesting short portraits of well-known and lesser-known princesses from the early Middle Ages to the present day, who exercised legitimate rule.
