Robert Falcon Scott entered history as a tragic figure among the great explorers: 35 days after his Norwegian rival Roald Amundsen, he reached the South Pole on January 16, 1912, and found death along with his four companions on the arduous journey back to England in the freezing temperatures of Antarctica.
