Lukian of Samosata was one of the most influential satirists of antiquity and beyond. He is regarded as the author of "A True History," making him the first true science fiction writer. His philosophical, theological, and literary works have had a lasting impact on European culture and continue to impress today with their learned mockery and rhetorical qualities. Alongside Erasmus of Rotterdam, Schiller, Wieland, and Goethe were particularly enthusiastic about his writings. The latter was inspired by Lukian's story "Philopseudes" for his own "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." His collected works are presented here in a gently revised translation by Wieland.
