"Martin Salander" is Keller's last novel, which remained unfinished. In it, the writer presents a politically or socially moral development arising from acute misery in the form of a paradoxical Bildungsroman: the unreasonable father Martin Salander fails as a guarantor for an old school friend, as a liberal educator of the people, and as the head of a five-member household, yet ultimately he is brought to reason by his wise son Arnold. The novel stands at the transition from poetic realism to modern, naturalism-influenced social criticism; in it, Keller also mocks his own liberal hopes from his earlier years.
