"Painting Must Hurt" A stitching nun, a young bride, a face covered in flowers - these are just a few motifs presented by the German-Bulgarian artist Oda Jaune (born 1979 in Sofia, lives and works in Paris) in her second monograph. The new watercolors, created between 2013 and 2015, explore the idea of the "social mask" and depict figures undergoing personal transformation. The work of the young painter, who studied as a master student under Jörg Immendorff at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and later became his wife, has garnered significant attention in recent years. In Oda Jaune's paintings, the notions of tenderness, childlike naivety, and violence blend in a surreal, sometimes grotesque manner. The stylistic device she employs of inverting the inside and outside allows for a glimpse into the hidden.
