Sigmund Freud developed his theory of the psychology of mass events under the impression of the leader figures emerging after World War I at the forefront of major political movements. According to him, the individual, sheltered in the mass and feeling secure because of it, experiences a kind of omnipotence. However, this positive feeling is accompanied by a decline in conscious personality. Deprived of self-control, the crowd develops a tendency towards uncontrolled emotional outbursts and self-amplifying affective actions.
