There are still no definitive answers to the questions of what exactly an image is, how images generate meaning, in what way imagery is constituted, or how the act of seeing images differs from other forms of visual perception. However, it is widely accepted that images are primarily characterized by their visibility, which is based on their materiality. Pictorial representations always rely on material carriers in which they are embodied and through which they communicate with their viewers.
