The question of the origin of artworks and artifacts has been highly controversial, not just since the dispute over the direction of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin. Bénédicte Savoy advocates for a radically new perspective in dealing with art, one that starts from the objects themselves, their individual biographies, and their journey to us. This approach not only makes their origins transparent but also reveals the history of colonialism and violence, as well as the trade and exchange relationships and the scientifically grounded curiosity that brought them to the museum. Contrary to the isolation stemming from fear of restitutions, such a perspective can bring people together and contribute to the idea of a shared world heritage.
