For many years, philosophers Jean Francois Billeter and Francois Jullien have shaped the discourse on the relationship between the West and China with their antagonistic positions. In particular, Jullien's writings enjoy enormous attention worldwide, aiming for global validity with their theses on cultural encounters, even beyond sinology. Swiss sinologist Jean François Billeter raises objections in this debate against Jullien's method and his perspective on China.
