Product details

After her very personal narrative "Believing in the Wild," Nastassja Martin's new book also takes readers back to Kamchatka, where they encounter old acquaintances: the Even. However, in "In the East of Dreams," the anthropologist now reflects on the entire history of her time with the Even. Following her field research with the Gwich'in in Alaska, Martin felt it necessary to venture to the other side of the Bering Strait and the former Iron Curtain. In Kamchatka, she meets an Even collective that was forced to settle in collective farms during the Soviet Union and, after the regime's collapse, decided to return to the forest to reinvent an autonomous way of life. This lifestyle is based on fishing, hunting, and gathering—quite atypical for the Even, who originally tended smaller herds of reindeer. Nastassja Martin accompanies them and describes how the collective reestablishes dialogue with animals and elements, with dreams playing an essential role. With their new daily life, this group responds to the decades-long devastation inflicted by colonial power politics. At the same time, they seek answers to the challenges of the present, while in the immediate vicinity, the ticking time bomb of an impending natural disaster in the form of rampant nickel extractivism has already begun.
